Project Overview

This under-used asphalt quad was excavated and transformed to create a valuable green oasis in the heart of London – the ultimate pocket park, to be used every day by hundreds of children forever!.  We worked with the deputy headteacher to create a concept design for forest school activities set within a natural woodland.  The site was 1950’s made up ground of 450mm hardcore under an asphalt and rubber surface. Our strategy was to remove around 60% of the hardcore and mix the remaining crushed brick with BS topsoils and deep tine to 1 meter – thereby bringing in much needed oxygen and water to the dehydrated land.   The students were thrilled to contribute their enthusiasm and hard work to an area which has become a special place for outdoor learning.  The project included a stone circle of wonderful old welsh boulders.  And the trees are growing beautifully.

Result

The transformation of the landscape is one thing, but the participation by the students within the project creates ownership, affection and a positive vibe which persists for years.
